Aigul Akhmetshina first sang Carmen at the Royal Opera House at twenty one. This film follows a single year in the role across some of the world's great stages, including The Metropolitan Opera, The Royal Ballet and Opera, Arena di Verona and more. Different directors, different productions, a different woman each time.

The film asks whether we can ever truly know Carmen, and finds instead what it costs to become her, over and over.

The New York Times called Akhmetshina "the world's reigning Carmen."
